The drug watchdog’s warning to steer the UK drug market away from the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra is a major turning point.

“This is the most extensive and rigorous regulatory review that has been undertaken in the UK to date, with more than 10 years of monitoring and analysis conducted by the MHRA and the regulatory authorities.
“As such, the MHRA is now asking the public for help with its prescription drug safety review.
“We are taking a hard line on the MHRA’s safety review, and we are working with the Health and Social Care Branch of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to ensure that it meets its obligations.”
Dr Phillips said the move was “part of the MHRA’s strategy to provide more stringent safety guidance in order to maintain the effectiveness and safety of Viagra, and other erectile dysfunction medicines”.
He added: “MHRA believes that the review is the best way to ensure the effectiveness and safety of Viagra and other similar medicines.
“This review was designed to provide more detailed information about the MHRA’s safety review and to ensure that we are working with the MHRA to ensure that the MHRA has made every possible effort to ensure that Viagra is safe and effective.
“If the MHRA does not take the necessary action, or if there are any concerns about what the MHRA will do about them, it may be a matter for a private consultation.
“These are not the only risks to the public that need to be considered. We are working with the MHRA and the health and social care authorities to ensure that this is the best way for the public to take the next steps to help the NHS to better protect public health.
“It’s important that we continue to see a change in prescribing practices in some of the more vulnerable groups, in line with the guidance that comes with the prescription drugs.”
